Three orphaned sisters break out of their foster home for a day at the beach, only to be swept out to sea on the back of a surfboard and marooned on a rocky island full of seals. This premise, for a 2022 children’s adventure film, may not sound particularly interesting, but it is honestly worth paying attention. The Island of Lost Girls is not a studio-backed commercial feature. It is not even fly-by-night filler for streaming services. Instead it is directed by Ann-Marie and Brian Schmidt, and stars their own children. You can likely count the film’s behind-the-scenes talent with your fingers. This is some weird cross between family project, home movie, and independent feature. I have never seen anything like it before.

Make no mistake: despite its limited cast and minimal crew, this is a legitimate feature. It is decently shot on digital, and crisply edited. It takes good advantage of its Baja location to showcase rocky shores and local seal populations. The sound quality – typically the bugbear of micro-budget films – is clear enough. It has a three-act structure, well-defined characters and goals, and even an unexpected array of digital effects. There are genuine honest-to-goodness seals in the film. There is proper action scenes in which the children do their own stunts.

Certainly there is nothing here that is ground-breaking or exceptionally done, but the key point is that other films managed the same with a lot more money and a lot more people. That this film not only exists but is decent enough to get film festival bookings is not something to be noted lightly. The Schmidts have achieved something wonderful here.

What precisely it is that they have achieved is harder to define. Who is the intended audience? A paying public, or the girls who got to make a movie? The three stars of the film – Autumn Fiore, Avila Schmidt, and Scarlet Schmidt – are not experienced actors, and it would be unfair to compare them. At the same time Scarlet – the youngest of the three – is a proper and funny delight, clearly relishing the attention and having a ball flapping and flailing in the water. Her sense of fun is infectious. Ultimately one has to ask: does it matter for whom this film was made. In its best moments I had fun. In the less interesting moments, and the film does admittedly drag on at 104 minutes, it was certainly no worse than anything else I have seen this year. The narrative even managed to surprise me at times.

It has been the case for a while that the ability to produce a feature film has been in the hands of anyone with some talent and a digital camera. Island of Lost Girls is proof that this is the case. A lot of effort and talent has gone into this work, and it is important that the Schmidt’s achievement is properly appreciated, but nonetheless it is compelling evidence of what can be done.

There is a dearth of children’s cinema these days, with most productions adding in plenty of jokes and humour for the parents and other adults. There is a place for this sort of amiable, simply-told entertainment on the big screen, and despite its flaws Island of Lost Girls is an unexpectedly pleasant diversion. More than that, it is inspiring. Explain to the kids how it was made before going in, and get them thinking about what they might be able to do with a little assistance and enthusiasm.

The Island of Lost Girls is screening at the Children’s Film Festival (CHIFF) from tomorrow in Melbourne and Sydney. Check the website for session times and more information.

Thanks for taking the time to watch our film. I think you would be surprised at how much the girls helped to make the film, and how much of the film was made with old fashion camera tricks. I also think that kids and film students would enjoy it because it’s something that virtually anyone could go out and shoot, just utilizing the environment around them in creative ways. We’re lucky enough to live near Baja, but kids could make a movie with whatever their world happens to be.

    1. 72 year young gpa and I was totally amazed watching. The girls were a joy to watch .I found it more enjoyable when I found out it was made by your family. I hope you can continue to find projects in the future

      1. Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. We’re trying to see if we can make another movie where some kids accidentally bring a giant piñata monster to life and they have to battle it with their BMX bikes traveling through storm drains and other worlds.

    2. I came across this movie and was curious how these little girls mde such a dangerous seeming movie. As I watched I became aware they were well built girls with great arm and leg muscles which seem rare today from always thubing someone on a call phone sitting on a couch! These girls could swim, run, were very good looking and I was hooked when the ocean took them further away. The very beginning hooked me though as it was about the stealth to get out of the house without the tea totler seeing them leave. I found the three girls making the move to leave the house and I was hooked.

The tiny one got my heart as she was adorable and had a great smile. The other 2 were good looking as well so getting to the rock in the ocean became very interesting. The big seals creatures were scarey as they were so much larger than the girls and I know they can be very dangerous. The near end seems had me wishing it ended soon as these animals were even jumped on by the little cutie so brave. I was laughing when they were screaming ner the end as they looked at each other and decided to scream again and that really make me laugh. I was totally fooled by the location as I was thinking Iceland with the giant lighthouse. I never realized it was Cal. But the really scarey part was upsetting with the middle lovely girl hanging on a rope and swinging because looking down her legs I could see the drop to rocks which was pretty upsetting as it appeared very dangerous. Also hoping they would get out of the deep water on just a breath od air in their lungs. They ctually had me praying a bit for their safety as I really liked all three of them. Little girls, woman to me are gifts from GOD to our future as they create a child like themselves and I always with for their safety. So if you get a chance to show them my letter to you please tell tmeh all I truly enjoyed the wonderful movie they created, all 3 are beautiful in their own special ways abd wish them the best of good fortune as I recorded this movie to keep forever so I can show my family the same thing I saw in them. They are beautiful, lovely to see, are very well built, strong looking but absolutely stunning good sisters that worked and made this movie excellent!!!

I hope to see more of them if they continue doing another movie. The work for the different scenes must have been a lot to do as well, but it was done really great especially seeing the eyes if the girls which is good work.Make darn sure to give each of them hug from Ray in Florida as I love the children from all the trvelling and visiting friends in many countries. GOD is good to bring us such gfts of life in such beautiful packages. We are blessed.

Ray Cauchon Spring Hill FL never forgetting these lovely girls always. XOXO

My granddaughter and I came across your movie this morning.
      Caught our attention right away.

Was blown away finding out the girls were yours and doing the acting themselves. Unbelievable!

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie and will recommend to others.

Are you going to make more?

      Sincerely, Suzette

        Hi Suzette,

I’m glad you guys liked it. The girls were pretty amazing little filmmakers and it was a fun project to do with them, and I’m glad to hear that you’re going to share it with others. The girls have three little brothers, and they want to do their own movie project, so we might have something in the pipeline. Its just one of those things that it take awhile to make because we have regular jobs (we do need to feed the girls), but we really want to do this next project. Our next film might be about a magical pinata serpent that comes alive and seeks revenge for all the pinatas that have been smashed before them. Thanks again for watching.

  2. Myself, my 2 daughter’s (5&6), and 11 year old son were absolutely mesmerized by your movie. The camera made us feel like we’re were swimming, drowning, climbing, and falling. I found myself holding my breath “underwater” at times. The inserted flash backs artfully referenced the girls shared history. We felt like we were living the plight of these 3 sisters. Quite literally a cliff hanger that left us continuously breathless like the characters portrayed. Characters that remind me of my own children (3 boys & 2 girls). Children who become heroes of their own story. Well Done. We hope to see another family production soon.

    1. It’s great to hear that the whole family enjoyed it. We’ve got 6 kids, and now the boys want their own movie as well.

  3. I loved the movie and am completely inspired what family can produce ❤️❤️❤️

    1. Thanks Miller, it was a fun experience with the kids. It was a lot of work, but well worth it.

  4. wow I am blown away by your movie. I felt every emotion. I feel so thrilled right now. The filming was extraordinary. It was so unique. I love that the kids were laughing through some very scary dare devil moments. It made me feel like they were so brave and had an adventure some spirit. It inspired me to face challenges and hard moments with laughter and joy rather than fear and anger. Loved discovering that your a real life family behind the script. The set appeared to be so joyful, that it was thus a joy to watch. It was a touch of home video, yet Cinema gold. Would love more Schmitt family films but no pressure because the best part was knowing you had fun making them.

    1. We do have an older one that’s a bit more raw called “Adventures of Jojo (and his annoying sister Avila)” . It was our first attempt, and I think you can find it on Amazon, Tubi, and a few others. We’re hoping to make more too, its just hard when its just the family, but we do enjoy doing it.

  5. Enjoyed the movie with my 5 year old.

  6. Good movie they did a great job made me

tear up at some parts I was kinda hoping the foster mom would have realized they were missing and that she had someone searching for them and that they would have been found and adopted by someone whom would want all three of them or the couple taking the oldest would have changed their minds when knowing why they ran away to stay together but overall even though that didn’t happen I’m glad they got to stay together and survived the adventure they went through yeah it sure was some grand adventure that’s for sure I’d rate the movie if I could five stars well done movie can’t wait to see more if they choose too.
